Areas of Practice

Mike Ewing has litigated family law cases in Virginia for over 30 years. He has extensive experience with complex financial cases, including business valuations, separate property tracing and high income spousal support matters. He regularly works with CPAs and other financial experts to fully advise and assist the firm’s clients in achieving reasonable resolutions to these difficult issues. Representing parents and grandparents in contested child custody cases is an important part of Mr. Ewing’s practice. He uses the knowledge he has gained from years of working with psychologists, doctors and other child specialists to help parents put together custodial arrangements that are in the best interests of their children. Although most family law matters can be resolved by mutual agreement, many cases must be decided in the courtroom. Mr. Ewing frequently appears before the Judges in Central Virginia, where he is an aggressive advocate for his clients.

Mr. Ewing understands how difficult and emotional these conflicts can be for clients. Although he has been through hundreds of divorces and custody disputes, he knows that for most people, this is their first and only experience with these challenges. While lecturing on Family Law at the Virginia State Bar’s First Day in Practice Seminar each year, Mr. Ewing stresses to newly admitted lawyers the importance of being easily accessible to family law clients. It is a priority for him and his staff to promptly respond to telephone calls and emails. Mr. Ewing and his assistant, paralegal, and associates work closely with the client as a team. He fully appreciates that litigation can be expensive for individuals and families, so he spends considerable time discussing each client’s litigation and alternative dispute resolution options so that they may focus their time and resources on the issues that are most important to them. Mr. Ewing has training and experience in Mediation and Collaborative Law and he has found these skills to be helpful to clients even in the most contested matters.

Mr. Ewing was honored to be accepted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML). He has been named one of the Top 50 Lawyers in Richmond and one of the Top 100 Lawyers in Virginia in the Virginia Super Lawyers® Publication.
